New Testament - [日本語]
The New Testament is the second half of the Bible and consists of 27 books. The New Testament is the hallmark of the Bible. It records the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ and the good news to people all over the world. The New Testament shows us that God, in His mercy, sent His only Son Jesus to be sacrificed on the cross so that all those who believe in him could receive eternal life.
The 27 books of the New Testament are organized as follows:
- Gospels (4 books): Matthew, Mark, Luke, John
- Acts of the apostles (1 book): Acts
- Epistles written by the apostle Paul (13 books): Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians, 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon
- Other epistles (8 books): Hebrews, James, 1 Peter, 2 Peter, 1 John, 2 John, 3 John, Jude
- Revelation (1 book): Revelation
The gospels record events before Jesus’ birth, during his life, surrounding His death, and shortly after his resurrection. The gospels were written by four different authors, and each gospel provides a different perspective on the life of Jesus Christ.
Acts, which was written by Luke, records the actions of Jesus’ followers after his death and resurrection. The resurrection of Jesus Christ was such a momentous event that many of his followers risked their lives to spread the message around the world. Acts describes their early persecution and records how the teachings of Jesus spread from a small group of individuals to a larger group of people seeking to discover the significance of Jesus’ death for their lives.
These five books are followed by 21 epistles, letters written by various authors to different Christian churches and individuals. These letters were written with the need of specific Christian churches and communities in mind, but they are included in the Bible because they have universal applications. Indeed, most sermons that you hear at churches are based on these letters that were written nearly 2000 years ago.
Revelation is the last book of the New Testament. It is a book of prophecy. Revelation contains statements of truth about the world and its future that were revealed to the apostle John. It predicts the second coming of Jesus Christ.
The New Testament is unimaginably rich in content and is the source of hope and faith of millions of Christians around the world. It invites everyone in the world, both Jewish and non-Jewish, to seek, love, and follow Jesus Christ.
